MAJOR CARD SORT

Introduction: You’ve probably already discovered that there are hundreds of different majors you can choose from at any given college or university.  There are probably many majors you have never heard of or considered before.  Faced with a list of majors‚ the ability to sort through those choices is often overwhelming.  Rather than giving up‚ choosing a major that seems popular‚ closing your eyes and randomly picking‚ or going with what everyone tells you would be a good choice‚ today I am going to walk you through a Major Card Sort.

First‚ we need to establish three categories:  AVOID‚ EXPLORE‚ CONSIDER.  You might want to place these from left to right in front of you.  All of the majors you can’t imagine ever completing will be on your left in a pile‚ all the majors that you are interested in will be in a pile on the right‚ and in the middle will be majors that you are unsure about.  They are “maybe’s” until you find out more about them.  If you have any questions about a major while you are sorting‚ please raise your hand and I will try to answer them.

Activity: I will give each of you a stack of major cards… and you can begin to sort them.  Then‚ you can fill out the provided worksheet and use it as a place to start when exploring the majors you need to find out more about or researching the majors you are interested in.

Alternate Activity: You will be given a sheet with the list of majors offered here at UT.  Sort them according to the three categories on the worksheet.
